What You Should Look for in an Essential Oil

Before you make purchase any essential oil, you’re going to want to make sure you’re actually getting a good quality oil. There are several things to look out for when you’re buying an essential oil to ensure it’s real and a good quality. In this section, I’ll go over everything you need to know about buying essential oils before you actually set out to make a purchase.

The Bottle

You can tell if an essential oil is real or not just by looking at the bottle. If the essential oil is real and of high quality, it will be bottled in a dark glass jar. Typically, the jars used are an amber color, but that’s not always the case. As long as you’re not purchasing an essential oil in a clear or lightly tinted bottle, it’ll most likely be a real essential oil.

When buying an essential oil, the best colored bottles to buy from are amber or cobalt blue. When you’re buying from a clear or light colored bottle, if the oil is real it’s going to spoil quicker because it’s exposed to sunlight. You most definitely should not buy an essential oil that’s bottled in plastic because the oil will deteriorate the plastic and will cause the oil to become contaminated.

The Label

Another part of the bottle you want to look at is the label. While not all real essential oils have this, it’s a good rule of thumb to buy essential oils that display the botanical name on the front of the label, most of the time under the oil name.

There’s a new trend happening recently where manufacturers will use terms such as “therapeutic grade” or “clinical grade”. While these terms may make the oil seem legitimate, that’s not always the case. Manufacturers can use these terms to mean anything they want because there is no set meaning for them. There is no specific criteria to be met to claim these terms so don’t use this as your deciding point when picking an oil.

Another thing to look for when you’re choosing an oil is the expiration date. You’ll want to make sure that you’re not buying an expired oil as it won’t be as effective as it would have been pre-expiration.

Another way of spotting a fake essential oil is if the bottle lists the words “fragrance oil”. If it has these words on the bottle then it isn’t actually an essential oil. Instead, it’s a manmade fragrance oil.

What it’s Made of

There are many manufacturers that sell their oils mixed with other substances, such as vegetable oils. This way they can sell more bottles of oil while using less of the actual oil. This makes their production cheaper. You want to make sure that when you choose an oil that it’s not mixed with anything else. make sure you read the ingredients on it. If it’s pure essential oil, it will say on the bottle that it’s 100% pure.

An easy way to tell if the oil you’ve bought contains vegetable oils is to administer a few drops onto a paper towel. If there’s vegetable oils in it, you’ll see an oil ring form around the essential oil. If it’s pure, the ring won’t appear.

Another great indicator that you’re buying a high quality essential oil is when the bottle advertises that it’s organic. Buying an organic oil is going to give you the best healing properties you can get out of an essential oil. While it’s more expensive than non-organic essential oils, you’re going to be getting a higher quality oil that’s grown and derived from plants sustainably.

Where it Comes From

When you buy an essential oil, you’re going to want to make sure that the bottle lists where the oil comes from. A good quality oil will tell you what country it was sources from or it will tell you a lot number that you can look up online. You should be wary of buying an essential oil that doesn’t list where the company has sourced it from.

When the bottle doesn’t list the location the oil was derived from, you’re unable to know if the oil is actually pure, organic, or sourced sustainably.

The Cost

The cost is another way to tell the difference between a low quality oil and a high quality oil. Like most other products, if you’re looking for a high quality oil, you’re going to have to spend a little more money to get it. While it’s not outrageously expensive, it is a fairly big cost for a small bottle of oil.

On the other end of this, be wary of essential oils that have a very large price tag. If you’re spending upwards of $50 on a bottle of essential oil, you’re probably paying for a brand markup. This happens when a brand becomes larger and more popular. What you’re really paying for is the name brand and not the oil itself. So while you’re going to be spending a more for high quality, you shouldn’t be spending a massive amount.

Prices also fluctuate based on the conditions and the availability of an oil. Be aware of this when you go to purchase an oil and it’s been marked up from the last time you’ve purchased it. While it shouldn’t be a massive markup or markdown, the prices can changed based on how easily it is to obtain the oils.

So Which Oil is the Best?

The lemon dssential oil is without a doubt the best essential oil in this list. While they are all great oils to choose from, the lemon essential oil has the most versatility and is the best at purifying the air. Keep in mind the things you should be looking for when making an essential oil purchase and you’ll be able to enjoy an authentic and high quality lemon oil as it purifies the air in your home.
