nippon kodo’s Kayuragi Sandalwood Incense Sticks are a personal favorite of mine!

nippon kodo’s Kayuragi Sandalwood Incense sticks are a personal favorite of mine. Oftentimes when I’m trying to focus and get my work done, you’ll find me at my desk, lighting one of these sticks!

These incense sticks have a lovely sandalwood smell without the undertones of burning wood that many incenses have when burned. This is because they have no wood core, so you’re only burning the incense itself.

Their aroma is a bit on the subtler side, but not so subtle that they barely have any scent. I personally like an incense that scents my space without attacking my nose, and these will scent your space beautifully.

While a bit pricier than most other incenses, these incense sticks have a pure sandalwood smell that will make sure your study sessions are as productive as they can be.

  • Smooth, warm sandalwood scent
  • Great for calming and focusing/grounding

How to Choose the Best Incense for Your Focus & Studying Needs

We know which incenses are the best for studying and helping your focus, but each of them have very different qualities. How do you know which one to burn and when?

It is important to take note of what you’re doing and where your studying weaknesses lie, or what you feel you’re struggling the most with at the moment.

If you find yourself feeling incredibly anxious while studying for a test or preparing for an interview, try picking an incense known for its calming abilities. While all the incenses we listed above are great for calming nerves, you may want to look at cinnamon incenses or sandalwood incenses–scents that specialize in creating calming aromas.

Maybe you are pulling an all-nighter, studying for your exam the next day. You could burn some rose incense if you want to make sure you keep all that information you’re cramming in your head, or maybe you light some peppermint incense to stay awake.

You could also mix and match your incenses! Burn a lavender incense stick for the creativity boost and pair it with some cinnamon to keep your spirits up. It’s totally up to you.

If you choose to mix and match, just make sure to be mindful of how much smoke your incense is producing. Too much incense burning in a small or poorly ventilated area can result in indoor air pollution, which in large quantities, can be harmful to your health.

What’s the Best Form to Burn Incense In?

Incense comes in all kinds of forms, including but not limited to sticks, cones, coils, sachets, etc. But is one kind better than another?

Each type of incense has its own set of pros and cons, but it really comes down to burn time, clean-up, and scent level.

Cone Incense

If you’re looking for a shorter-burning incense, cone incense is the way to go. As it burns, it burns more surface area of the incense due to the cone shape, creating a stronger aroma. On the other hand, since it burns so much surface area at once, it will burn up faster than the long, slim incense sticks.

When cones burn, they don’t drop ash as much as they become it. Cone incense ash often stays in the same shape as it was burned in. If burned on a dish or holder of some kind, this makes cleanup simple, as you could just dump the dish/holder into a garbage can and get rid of the ash all in one piece.

Since the cone is now completely ash, it is extremely delicate, so picking it up with your fingers could cause the cone of ash to fall apart, leaving you with an even more challenging mess than you had before.

Coil Incense

If you are looking for an incense with an extra-long burn time, you may want to look at an incense coil. Incense coils are long, thin strips of incense that have been coiled into a spiral pattern, increasing burn time without taking up too much space.

These are more difficult to clean than many other incenses unless you burn one in a fireproof dish. It is recommended that you burn them on an incense coil stand, as it allows the aroma to circulate through the air better. This method, however, results in ash falling everywhere, rather than in one container.

Sachets are great if you’re looking for a flame-free way to bring incense into your home. Sachets are dried herbs tied in a thin cloth bag that can then be placed on surfaces or in drawers. These last the longest and are the least messy, but they tend to be rather weak-smelling.

Incense Sticks

We personally recommend using the stick form of incense, as it provides an even burn that lasts longer or shorter depending on the length of the stick itself. They also tend to be the most affordable and the most successful when it comes to producing pleasant scents.

The burnt part of the stick turns to a fine ash and will fall off the stick, which can sometimes make for a messy clean-up. With the right incense holder, however, catching the ash and cleaning it up is easy.

Precautions to Take When Burning Incense

Since most incense uses a flame to release its aroma, there are certain precautions you should take if you plan to use it in your home.

Always burn incense on a fireproof dish or holder of some kind. Ideally, incense should be burned on an incense holder. Although incense produces its smoke with more of a smolder than an active flame, it is still hot and can light fires if not used correctly.

Incense also drops ash as it burns, and some of the ash could still be hot. A fireproof dish or incense holder will catch all of that falling ash and make sure it doesn’t fall onto anything flammable.

Make sure to check the ingredients of your incense before burning. Some incenses are made with charcoals or toxic chemicals, which can stain your walls and furniture, and even be harmful to your health at high levels.

It’s also important that if you plan on burning incense indoors, make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area. This can help reduce air pollution, and thus reduces the amount of smoke you’re inhaling.

Our number one favorite incense would have to be nippon kodo Kayuragi Sandalwood Incense Sticks. Sandalwood is not only a stress reliever, but it is grounding and invigorating. This incense has a shorter burn time and comes at a higher price point than the other incenses we listed, but the benefits you receive from it and the aroma it produces are heads above the rest.

Our second favorite incense for studying is Plant Guru 11″ Peppermint Incense Sticks. Peppermint is an incredibly versatile scent when it comes to studying, and its wide range of benefits makes it a close second to the nippon kodo Kayuragi Sandalwood Incense Sticks.

Plant Guru’s 11″ Peppermint Incense Sticks also come at a fantastic value for the price, giving you one hundred sticks for less than $9. The scent of these incense sticks is pleasantly subtle, which is great for such a powerful smell as peppermint.

Both of these incenses are stick incenses, which is our favorite kind of incense for its burn and safety. They are easy to clean up, easy to burn, and both produce a lovely scent to help you work without overwhelming your space, or more importantly, your nose.

Did you like our list? Share it with your friends! And don’t forget to give these incenses a try–they’ll change the way you study!

I love candles! I have personally tried over 100 brands of candles. The total burn time of these candles is over 5000 hours. I also talk about essential oil diffusers and reed diffusers. Essential oil diffusers and diffusers are also an important part of the scent in my home.
