Candle wick trimmers all look alike, and it may seem that there’s nothing really to think about – just pick the cheapest wick trimmer! But actually, going for the cheapest available option wouldn’t be wise since you would be sacrificing quality. For some people, this is acceptable, but not for everyone.

There’s more to wick trimmers than you may be realizing. But with our buyer’s guide and our roundup of the Top wick trimmers, you should be able to spend your money safely.

In this article, we’re going to review the following candle wick trimmers:

Why Should You Trim Candle Wicks?

Do you even need to bother with trimming candle wicks, let alone buy a wick trimmer?

The answer is that although candles will burn just fine without trimming, trimming the wick will allow you to minimize soot and get a better-looking, even flame.

With untrimmed wicks, incomplete combustion of the fuel is very likely. And if you didn’t know, soot forms precisely during incomplete combustion.

By keeping the candle wick short, you will be able to ensure complete combustion with little to no soot. Typically, it’s recommended to trim the candle wick down to 1/4 – 1/8 of an inch for a clean burn. Read more about How To Burn The Perfect Candle.

Besides, as mentioned above, you will get a cleaner-looking flame. This is because while burning, a longer wick will become crooked, altering the shape of the flame and also possibly resulting in uneven burning and melting of the wax.

Candle Wick Trimmer VS Regular Scissors – Why Buy A Special Tool?

Next, if you can trim the wick with scissors, why even spend $10 on a wick trimmer?

Well, there are three big reasons for this:

  • Wick trimmers have angled tips and finger holes. This will especially matter with candle jars. It’s difficult to evenly trim candle jar wick with scissors, especially if the wax is halfway melted and deep into the jar. Thanks to their angled tips and finger holes, wick trimmers are very convenient to trim wick with.
  • Wick trimmers can collect the trimmed wick. Wick trimmers have a small tray at the tip. Once you make the cut, the trimmed wick debris will be caught by this tray for easy disposal. With scissor trimming, the debris would fall into the melted wax, making disposal pretty messy.
  • The trimmed wick doesn’t fly off after a cut. With scissors, the wick can get launched into the air after cutting. In contrast, wick trimmers typically are designed in a way to prevent this. This not only allows for cleaner trimming but also ensures that the wick stays in the disposal tray.

For some people, the aesthetics of wick trimmers matter as well. Aside from being a practical candle accessory, wick trimmers can be placed alongside your candles and serve as an integral part of the room.

What about nail clippers?

Unlike scissors, nail clippers can pretty easily reach into candle jars. So in terms of convenience, nail clippers are definitely superior. But they still can’t catch the trimmed wick.

With that, if you want maximum convenience and are ready to pay money for it, then a wick trimmer is the way to go.

Things To Consider In The Best Candle Wick Trimmer

Although candle wick trimmers seem visually similar to each other, they can perform with varying effectiveness. Plus, there may be a few important factors to consider that you aren’t even aware of. With this in mind, let’s briefly talk about the key features to look for in a wick trimmer.

Sharpness

When shopping online, you won’t be able to easily determine how sharp a wick trimmer is. The most reliable way to find out how well a wick trimmer performs is to read buyer reviews. If there are any problems with the wick trimmer, the reviews should let you know.

Also, know that cheap wick trimmers tend to be not too sharp and struggle with thick wicks. If you have the budget, we suggest that you ignore cheap wick trimmers and go for something more premium ($10-$15 range).

Material

Wick trimmers are typically made from stainless steel. Stainless steel is durable, doesn’t stain (as evident from its name), and is sometimes rust-resistant (depending on how it has been made).

Some wick trimmers may be made from plain steel, however. Steel is durable, but it does stain and rust if unprotected.

A stainless steel wick trimmer would probably be ideal because it would just live longer, especially in humid storage conditions. However, if you can keep your wick trimmer away from humidity, non-stainless steel should work as well.

What’s included

Wick trimmers are often sold in sets along with other candle care accessories. For example, on our roundup, we have two candle accessory sets that include a wick trimmer, a snuffer, and a dipper. Snuffers and dippers are used to safely extinguish candles, so if you don’t have them already, consider buying a candle accessory set.

Design

Don’t ignore aesthetics as well. As mentioned above, candle wick trimmers can serve as part of your interior just like your candles do. With that, it would probably be a good idea to pick a wick trimmer that works with your home’s theme.

Candle Wick Trimmers Reviews

Calary Candle Wick Trimmer, Dipper, And Snuffer Set

If your budget is limited, then consider this set from calary. This candle accessory set is inexpensive yet includes three handy items – one trimmer, one dipper, and one snuffer.

Although this set is pocket-friendly, the included accessories have a pretty good build quality – they are all made stainless steel, which should make them resistant to rust and very durable.

The calary candle accessory set is very pretty as well. This is mainly thanks to its color scheme – the one we based our review on came in gorgeous rose gold. The set is also available in champagne gold, which also looks fabulous.

The not so good thing about this set lies in the trimmer itself – it may struggle to trim thick wicks. But to be fair, given how cheap this set is, it’s not at all unexpected for us that the wick trimmer isn’t the sharpest in the world. If you want easier trimming, then consider more premium wick trimmers.

Another, perhaps more minor issue is that the calary accessory set comes in a plastic bag, so it’s not the best choice as a gift. But for personal use, this shouldn’t matter.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Includes a wick trimmer, dipper, and a snuffer.
  • Attractive gilded stainless steel build.
  • Rust-resistant.

Cons:

  • The trimmer may struggle with thick wicks.
  • Comes in just a clear plastic bag.

EricX Light Candle Wick Trimmer

The EricX Light candle wick trimmer is a little on the pricier side. However, it should do a better job at trimming than the trimer from the calary candle accessory set.

The build quality in the EricX wick trimmer is very nice – the trimmer boasts a sturdy stainless steel build. Like in the calary set, this trimmer should be rust-resistant – however, we are not sure about this because EricX doesn’t indicate anywhere if this tool is indeed resistant to rust.

In terms of design, this wick trimmer’s silver finish is pretty nice but boring after what we’ve seen in the calary set. With that said, if function is more important to you than form, then the EricX trimmer should be a better buy.

One problem we have with this wick trimmer (apart from the price) is that it comes in an unremarkable box. Unlike the plastic bag that the calary set comes in, the box is rigid and will keep the trimmer safe during shipping, but it’s still not good enough for gift-making. For the price, we’d expect more.

Pros:

  • Sharp
  • Durable stainless steel construction.

Cons:

  • Pricey
  • We’d expect more gift-worthy packaging for the price.

Matte black Sinen candle wick trimmer

This candle wick trimmer from Sinen is very similar to the EricX trimmer – it’s priced closely and has comparable build quality. With that said, it has a few differences that may matter to some of our readers.

First up, Sinen advertises that this wick trimmer is rustproof. Again, the EricX trimmer should be as well, but if you want to get a trimmer that’s rustproof, then go for Sinen’s trimmer because it’s clearly advertised as such.

Next, we like the matte black coating of the Sinen wick trimmer more than the plain silver finish of the EricX wick trimmer. This is very subjective, but the Sinen trimmer is more eye-catching to us.

In terms of trimming, this wick trimmer seems to be comparable to the EricX wick trimmer. Both are pretty sharp and easily cut through wick, so you shouldn’t have any problems here. With that, the main differentiating points between the two wick trimmers are color and possibly rust resistance.

Pros:

  • Sharp
  • Rustproof stainless steel build.
  • Attractive matte black finish.

Cons:

  • Pricey

WICKMAN Candle Accessory Gift Pack

If you are looking for a wick trimmer as a gift, then consider this gift accessory pack from WICKMAN. It’s not too expensive, but it comes in a lovely package that will work nicely for gifting.

What’s also nice about the WICKMAN gift pack is that it includes not only a trimmer but also a snuffer and dipper – just like the calary accessory set reviewed earlier. With that said, the wick trimmer in the WICKMAN set does its job better – it’s sharp and shouldn’t struggle with trimming even thick and hard wicks.

The build quality in the WICKMAN candle accessories is good for the price. However, unlike all other wick trimmers on our list, the accessories in this set are made from regular steel, not stainless steel. This may not mean much in terms of durability, but it will matter for rust and staining.

Pros:

  • Comes in a beautiful gift package.
  • Includes a wick trimmer, snuffer, and dipper.
  • The wick trimmer is sharp.
  • Made from steel.

Cons:

  • The steel used in the accessories isn’t stainless.

Silver Sinen candle wick trimmer

We’ve decided to showcase this candle wick trimmer from Sinen as the final product on our roundup. This wick trimmer has made it onto our list thanks to its inexpensiveness – not only is it a good option for tight budgets, but it also adds variety to our list.

This wick trimmer is not perfect – most importantly, it may struggle with thicker, tougher wicks. However, we know that not everybody is willing to buy a steeply-priced wick trimmer, which is why we’ve included the Sinen trimmer on our list.

This wick trimmer is similar to the matte black Sinen trimmer reviewed earlier. However, that one has a better build quality and more favorable ratings – 4.6 vs 4.2 stars on Amazon. Well, after all, you get what you pay for, don’t you?

Material-wise, this wick trimmer isn’t much different from its matte black counterpart – both are made from rustproof stainless steel. So even though this wick trimmer isn’t as good at trimming, it should still be pretty durable.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Made from rustproof stainless steel.

Cons:

  • May struggle with tougher wicks.

Final Words

Although all the reviewed candle wick trimmers are good buys for the money, we think that the best of them all is the matte black Sinen candle wick trimmer. This wick trimmer is sharp, well-built, rustproof, and has a nice look to it thanks to the matte black finish.

A close second pick is the EricX wick trimmer. This wick trimmer has a frankly boring silver finish, and we can’t for sure say whether it’s rust-resistant like our top pick, but it offers comparable quality and wick trimming performance.

The remaining 3 picks have very interesting things to offer as well – the WICKMAN set comes in a gorgeous gift box, the calary accessory set is rather inexpensive and features a fabulous gilded finish, while the silver Sinen candle wick trimmer is cheap yet offers decent build quality.

We struggle to tell which of these options is going to work the best for you. The matte black SInen wick trimmer should work for many of our buyers – however, if your needs are different, don’t feel pressured by our recommendation. If you feel that one of the remaining 4 wick trimmers will work better for you, then go for it!

I love candles! I have personally tried over 100 brands of candles. The total burn time of these candles is over 5000 hours. I also talk about essential oil diffusers and reed diffusers. Essential oil diffusers and diffusers are also an important part of the scent in my home.
